You’re Not “Bad at the Dentist.” You’re Human.

Maybe it’s the sound of the drill. Maybe it’s a bad experience from years ago, a gag reflex that won’t quit, or a pounding heart the moment you pull into the parking lot. Whatever the reason, dental anxiety is real, and it often leads people to put off care until a small problem turns into a big one. You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through treatment.

At Langley Perio & Implants, our Langley periodontists offer oral and IV (intravenous) sedation so you can get the care you need while staying calm, comfortable, and in control of the experience.

Wondering which option is right for you? Call (604) 227-1869 or request an appointment online. We proudly welcome patients from Langley, Surrey, Abbotsford, and Maple Ridge.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during dental treatment. It is not a separate kind of procedure. It is a way of making procedures such as extractions, gum grafting, and dental implant surgery far more comfortable, especially if you feel fearful or anxious.

Some patients call it “sleep dentistry,” though the experience depends on the type and level of sedation you receive. Your periodontist will explain what to expect in your case.

How Sedation Makes Dental Visits Easier

Sedation can help in ways that go beyond calming your nerves:Smiling patient in dental chair with dentist preparing for consultation about implant-supported dentures.

  • Relief from anxiety and discomfort throughout your appointment
  • Less awareness of sights, sounds, and smells in the room
  • A reduced gag reflex, helpful if you have trouble with instruments or impressions
  • More done in fewer visits, since multiple treatments can often be completed at once
  • Time that seems to pass faster than it really does

For many people, the biggest benefit is simply that they finally get the care they’ve been avoiding.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Safety is our priority. Both oral and IV sedation can be safe and effective when the appropriate option is selected and administered by trained professionals.

  • Additional training. Our team has completed additional training in sedation dentistry and stays current with the latest research.
  • ACLS certification. Our periodontists are certified in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
  • Advanced monitoring. Our office is equipped with advanced monitoring devices, including ECG, and we track your vital signs with a pulse oximeter during IV sedation.
  • A full health review beforehand. We consult with you before choosing a sedation method.

Who May Not Be a Sedation Dentistry Candidate?

Some situations make sedation unsuitable, including pregnancy, certain medical conditions, or a combination of smaller factors. That’s why it’s so important to be completely open with our team about your health history and any medications you take. The more we know, the safer we can make your care.

What to Expect: Before, During, and After Your Visit with Sedation Dentistrydental assistant in room

Before your appointment

  • You’ll have a consultation so we can review your medical history, discuss your anxiety, and recommend the best option.
  • You’ll receive specific pre-appointment instructions. Please follow them carefully, including anything we tell you about eating, drinking, and current medications.
  • Arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment. This is required for both oral and IV sedation.

During your appointment

  • You’ll be relaxed and monitored from start to finish.
  • With oral sedation, you’ll take your pill beforehand, so you can feel relaxed even in the waiting room.
  • With IV sedation, our team adjusts the medication as needed and watches your vital signs closely.

After your appointment

  • Your companion will drive you home. Take it easy for the rest of the day, and follow the aftercare instructions we give you.
  • Oral sedation takes some time to wear off. IV sedation wears off fairly quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry

Sedation is designed to relieve pain and anxiety. Your provider will also use local anesthetic where needed for the procedure. Talk with us about your specific concerns.

It depends on the type and level of sedation. With oral sedation, most patients find they have little or no memory of the visit. With IV sedation, time passes faster than usual, and you may notice fewer sights, sounds, and smells.

With IV sedation, we adjust the level of medication to keep you in a semi-awake state instead of complete unconsciousness. Your periodontist will explain exactly what to expect.

Cost depends on the type of sedation and the length and complexity of your treatment. Many plans help cover it, and our team will go over your options before your appointment.
